Concert Comments

by Tom and Dianne, via Keith

Dianne and I missed you and Pat at the 10th Annual Patriotic Concert.

Hats off to the instrumental and vocal music students at Rockport-Fulton High School.  As usual, the Martha Luigiu Auditorium was filled to capacity.  The sounds of Sousa and Tchaikovsky filled the room and to the best of my meager counting abilities, there were well over 300 students on stage.

It still amazes me that this little town on the Gulf Coast of Texas and it's teenage kids have such tremendous respect for the past and current members of the Armed Forces.  Their teachers are pretty special also.

We did see a number of our fellow Rockport 35 friends in attendance, which tells me that while we are escaping the frigid north, we still know the important things in life.

Thanks veterans and current members of OUR Armed Services!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Rake Trees?

by Keith

Rake Tree in Bloom
Yesterday we drove to Weslaco to the Rio Grande Premium Outlets. It's a huge outlet mall, 141 stores, according to them.

The mall at San Marcos is also a Premium Outlets mall. We've not been to that one, but this one was very nice. And very clean! Around Mission, the trees appear to grow plastic bags, there are so many of them floating around.

At the mall they weren't growing bags, but rakes!

Doesn't this look like a leaf rake? Or maybe a broom?

Just a Reminder...

The patriotic concert by the local HS band and choir is coming up soon! (Monday evening!)

Another Art Class for Pat

by Keith

Photo of eggshell halves
Objects de Art?

Pat signed up for an art class: Drawing for Watercolors or something like that.

She has a thick textbook.

And homework!

She's two or three lessons into the program and has to draw four pictures before the next class. One of them:  draw eggs in a form of herchoice. (Scrambled, over-easy, whole, eggshells, etc.)

Apparently it isn't as easy as one would think!

Perhaps a masterpiece will come out of this!

If so, it'll be shown right here on the Rockport 35 RV Park blog!

Brand X

by Dianne, inspired by Keith

Since the “official John Deere rain gauge” is no longer in residence here in the park, we’ve had to resort to the “brand X” rain gauge. Equally as accurate?  Let’s hope so.  It rained most of last night but I believe many of us were made aware of the storm’s intensity about 4 am this morning when the gentle rain became heavy and was accompanied by thunder and lightning.  Our unofficial rain gauge showed  3.3 inches of rain (some may read it as 33 tenths of an inch). Personally, I'm ready for some sunshine. How about you?

Congratulations to Jim and Pat

by Dianne

Congratulations to Jim and Pat Whitten. They returned to Rockport 35 RV Park again this year and Pat shared the following story and pictures.

We were married at Salem Lutheran Church in Sandwich, IL on June 30, 1962, where we are still members. We had 2 boys. Brad died in '95 of an epileptic seizure. Jeff and his wife Tanja live in Rock Island. They hosted an Open House at our senior center on Saturday June 30th. Jeff has a side line as a DJ so he played music from "the era" and Tanja works for a caterer and does decorating on the side. She decorated the Center in our wedding colors and made two large memory boards. It was a great day with food left over to serve during coffee hour at church on Sunday. After the open house, family that was in attendance came back to our house for a supper.

They are currently on 2nd Street N and, I believe, this is their fourth year at the Park. Fifty years together is a milestone not all married couples achieve. We wish them many more healthy, happy years together.

More Entertainment

by Keith

The other Priority One activity we endorse is the Cathedral Concert Series, performed at Corpus Christi Cathedral.

Each year there was one concert in which we were especially interested. In two years, it was the U.S. Naval Academy Men's Glee Club! Another year, the St. Olaf Choir.

This year, there are two concerts which Pat and I would not want to miss: Chanticleer and Concordia Choir of Minnesota. Fortunately, both are during the season for Winter Texans so you can put them on your calendar if interested.

Rather than try to describe their concerts, I'll just list them here, with links, so you can view them for yourself.

January 20     Chanticleer

March 2   Concordia Choir of Minnesota

The Cathedral is very easy to get to. The concerts are free. There is a freewill offering taken to support the Concert Series, now in its 29th season.

Rockport-Fulton HS Special Concert

by Keith

The Rockport-Fulton High School Band and Choir Patriotic Concert is coming up, on January 28!

If you love America, band music, or choir music, you should attend!

If you love all three of the above, put it on your MUST DO list right now!

Rockport-Fulton HS Patriotic Concert, 2010

This concert is performed by a stage full, literally full, of talented students of the local HS. That's about 200 young men and women in all. They perform a number of pieces covering several types of music—but all with the underlying theme of patriotism.

Like peppy marches? They'll have one (or more.) Like a melodious overture? It'll probably be there. Want to enjoy a surprise vocal solo, duet, or quartet? I'd be surprised if they didn't have one!

If you're concerned about the future of our country, go to this concert. Those kids are so well rehearsed and so well-mannered that it will make you feel good about the future.

We weren't aware of this concert so missed two or three of them during our first years at Rockport 35 RV Park. But once "discoverd" this concert has been at the top of our priority list. (Oh, there is one other activity at the top, too—I'll touch on it in a different article.)

Of course you don't have to believe me and that's OK. Just ask Tom and Dianne! They, too, have been regular attenders. And Tom knows a thing or two about school concerts! And so does Tim, of course.

There is no admission. You will have the opportunity to financially support Music Department activities as you exit the great auditorium.

I think you'll want to!
